Medan - FKM USU: To commemorate World Nature Conservation Day, FKM USU collaborated with the North Sumatra Chapter of the Indonesian Environmental Scholars Association (PERWAKU), Jagatara, and public and private universities throughout the city of Medan on a “Productive Tree Planting” event. The event took place in the Puncak Merga Silima area, Suka Makmur Village, Kutalimbaru Subdistrict, Deli Serdang Regency, on Wednesday, July 15, 2026. This community service initiative was spearheaded by the North Sumatra Regional Chapter of the Indonesian Association of Environmental Scholars (Perwaku) and the Faculty of Public Health at the Universitas Sumatera Utara (FKM USU), with the participation of the FKM USU Student Executive Board (BEM). Participating organizations included the North Sumatra Regional Chapter of Jagatara, Rumah Briket Medan, and Cendikia Hijau Indonesia. Two public universities are involved: the University of North Sumatra (FKM, Fahutan, FMIPA), and the State Islamic University (UIN) of North Sumatra; while the private universities involved numbered six, namely the North Sumatra Health Institute (Inkes Sumut), Muhammadiyah University of North Sumatra (UMSU), Sari Mutiara University (USM) Indonesia, Islamic University of North Sumatra (UISU), Medan Area University (UMA), and Helvetia Health Institute (Inkes Helvetia). The theme of this event was “Bestari (Commitment to Health Education and a Beautiful Environment),” which is part of the Community Service (Abdimas) program as an implementation of the three pillars of higher education. In her opening remarks, the Dean of the FKM USU, Dr. Umi Salmah, SKM, M.Kes, stated that this collaboration represents a tangible contribution by the university to environmental conservation and is expected to strengthen the role of the academic community as agents of change in supporting climate change mitigation efforts and the achievement of SDGs 13 (Climate Action) and 15 (Terrestrial Ecosystems). Through this activity, the FKM USU is committed to creating a campus that makes a positive impact and to strengthening cross-sectoral synergy in sustainable environmental conservation. The event proceeded smoothly and successfully resulted in the planting of 600 productive tree seedlings in the Puncak Merga Silima area.
