Medan - FKM USU: Students of the Doctoral Program in Public Health Science (IKM) of FKM USU held a food processing training activity in Pantai Cermin Kiri Village, Pantai Cermin Subdistrict, Serdang Bedagai Regency, on June 14, 2022. The processed food source was sagor catfish, a local catch from the area, which is not commonly consumed, especially by children. This led to the idea of turning the fish into nuggets. By processing the fish into nuggets, children would be more willing to consume it because of its appealing shape. The training activities were attended by integrated service post cadres, mothers, as well as the wife of the village head. These skills are expected to be passed on to other mothers in Pantai Cermin Kiri Village. The training began with a tutorial on making nuggets by the doctoral students and continued with a nugget-making competition involving local mothers in groups. This activity implements the community development course taught by the Head of the Doctoral Program in Public Health Science of FKM USU, Dra. Nurmaini, M.K.M, Ph.D. The Village Head of Pantai Cermin Kiri, Muhammad Elizar, who attended the event, expressed his enthusiasm for the activity conducted by the doctoral students. According to him, improving skills in processing fish, which is affordable and accessible in the area, would enhance children's nutrition and boost the local economy by utilizing local catches. "This activity of processing fish into nuggets will be presented at the village's PKK forum," said the Village Head. Also present at the event was Vice Dean III of FKM USU, Ir. Etty Sudaryati, MKM, Ph.D.
