International Summer Course 2026 Flyer

Tropical regions are characterized by their unique ecological diversity, rich cultural traditions and distinctive health challenges. This summer course, offered by the Faculty of Public Health at the University of Sumatera Utara, delves into the multifaceted world of public health in tropical areas. It explores how local wisdom, indigenous knowledge, and traditional practices play a vital role in addressing public health issues and how these regions navigate their distinctive environmental factors to ensure the well-being of their communities. This course will combine lectures, group discussions, case studies and field visits to local communities.

This program aims to:

1. To understand the unique public health challenges in tropical regions
2. To explore how local wisdom and traditional practices contribute to public health in these areas
3. To understand community efforts to maintain health in the local cultural context
4. To observe the phenomenon of community behavior in health related to local community culture and habits

This course will combine lectures, group discussions, case studies and field visits to local communities. Students will have the opportunity to interact with local experts and community members to gain a practical understanding of public health in tropical areas. These activities will be held at 12th–16th October 2026 for the online course and 17th–19th October 2026 for the field visit.

Program participant of the Summer Course Program is open to undergraduate and graduate students interested public health, environmental science, tropical studies, and related disciplines. The topic of this course are Introduction to Tropical Public Health, Cultural and Traditional Practices in Tropical Health, Environmental Factors and Disease in Tropical Regions, Field Visits and Community Engagement.
