Medan - FKM USU: The Department of Environmental Health of FKM USU held a webinar themed "Management of COVID-19 Medical Waste" on Saturday (10/4). The guest speakers were Ir. Sinta Saptarina Soemisrno, M.Sc. (Director of Performance Assessment for Hazardous and Non-Hazardous Toxic Waste Management, Director General of Waste, Toxic, and Hazardous Waste Management, Ministry of Environment and Forestry); Prof. Dr. Anwar Daud, S.K.M., M.Sc. (Professor at FKM UNHAS); and dr. Surya Dharma, M.P.H. (Lecturer at the Department of Environmental Health of FKM USU). The theme was chosen in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on managing infectious medical waste generated from patients and medical personnel exposed during treatment. Proper handling of infectious waste is crucial as it poses a risk of becoming a transmission medium if not managed effectively. Excessive biomedical waste has emerged as a significant new threat to public health and the environment. In her opening remarks, the Dean of FKM USU, Prof. Dr. Dra. Ida Yustina, M.Si, expressed that the webinar's theme was highly relevant amidst the ongoing pandemic. Prof. Ida encouraged participants to engage actively in the event to gain meaningful insights.
