Medan—FKM USU: Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia visited the FKM USU as part of the UKM–USU Network for International Training and Exchange in Non-Communicable Diseases (UNITE-NCD) 2026 program, which took place Tuesday through Thursday, April 28–30, 2026. The event was attended by 17 students from the Public Health Doctoral Program, accompanied by Prof. Shamsul Azhar bin Shah, along with faculty members from the USU Faculty of Public Health. The event began with a joint seminar titled “NCD Challenges in Malaysia and Indonesia: Comparative Perspectives, Responses, and Lessons for Action,” featuring a presentation by Frans Yosef Sitepu, S.K.M., M.Kes, from the Medan City Health Department on policies and programs for the control of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). The session continued with presentations by speakers from Malaysia—Dr. Mohammad Ezzat bin Mohammad Ismail—and from Indonesia—Dr. Sri Novita Lubis, S.K.M., M.Kes—followed by a panel discussion that emphasized that raising public awareness about healthy lifestyles and strengthening early detection are key determinants of success in NCD control. Through this event, FKM USU is also strengthening its contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 17 on Partnerships for the Goals, SDG 3 on Good Health and Well-being, and SDG 4 on Quality Education through international collaboration, knowledge exchange, and cross-national academic learning in the field of public health. The series of activities continued with a visit to the Tanah Tinggi Community Health Center in Binjai City to observe primary health care services and was concluded with a visit to the Prof. Dr. Chairuddin P. Lubis USU Hospital to study the implementation of the health insurance program and the hospital’s service system.
